The supplied water of the Shahid Mofatteh power plant is provided from the wastewater treatment plant of Hamedan. As a consequence, the microbial contamination of this power plant is significantly higher than the other power plants. Furthermore, the Mofatteh power plant is distinguished by its use of both wet and dry cooling towers which operate in a combined mode during the hot season. Based on the nature of the supplied water and the complex mechanics of the cooling towers, monitoring the microbial parameters in both wet and dry cooling tower is of critical importance. To monitor the microbial parameters of the power plant, supplied water (wastewater), dry cooling tower water, wet cooling tower water were analyzed for microbial, physicochemical, and chemical characteristics. Regarding the microbial analysis, both general and specific tests TDS for industrial microorganisms were conducted in this research. Physicochemical monitoring involved measuring conductivity, Total Dissolved Solids, salinity and pH is performed as well. Finally, chemical monitoring included the analysis of ions associated with corrosion (both causative and product ions), scale-forming ions and ions that serve as nutrients for bacterial growth were carried out. The total bacterial count value reaches approximately to 10³ CFU/ml for the wet cooling tower and it reaches near zero for dry cooling tower. These TBC levels correspond to water conductivity of 1.15 µS/cm for the dry cooling tower and 8400 µS/cm for the wet cooling tower. The SRB level of zero in the dry cooling tower is attributable to the absence of sulfate ions (the nutrient source for SRB), whereas the "Moderate" SRB level in the wet cooling tower is consistent with the high sulfate concentration (2137.9 ppm). NRB levels remain constant at a "Moderate" range in both the wet and dry cooling towers and the primary reason for the elevated NRB levels is the source water, which contains a nitrate ion concentration of approximately 38 ppm. Operational strategies specifically optimizing oxidizing biocide dosages, applying organic biocides, utilizing reverse osmosis, employing nitrate-selective ion-exchange resins during treatment and using iron corrosion inhibitors are recommended to reduce microbial contamination and enhance the performance of wet and dry cooling towers.
